When someone says the name Harry Potter, I’m sure most of you know immediately what they’re talking about. A beloved book series (and subsequent movie universe) that celebrated it’s 20th anniversary this past June! Today, for many of the potterheads out there, also marks Harry Potter’s 38th birthday. In celebration of this very Potter year I wanted to create a group of cards inspired by the four Houses of Hogwarts!
I wanted to create an easy card design that could utilize a variety of color combinations. They each represent the four Houses, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. I knew I wanted to use my go-to stamp set Picture Perfect Birthday (I have a whole post about it here) because the candles made the best background to play with the different House colors! Each card uses the same instructions and card sizes, so it’s even perfect for a class where people can choose (or be sorted into) their Houses.
Let’s start off with Mr. Potter’s very own House, Gryffindor! This House seeks those who represent courage, chivalry, and determination. The colors are scarlet and gold so I used Cherry Cobbler and Daffodil Delight. You’ll need the candle, stripe patter, sentiment and flame stamps from the Picture Perfect Birthday stamp set. Additionally you will need the splatter stamp from the Touches of Texture stamp set.
First start with the 2 1/2″ x 1 3/4″ Whisper White card stock. I used the splatter stamp to create texture behind the greeting by using Daffodil Delight and stamping off once before stamping to card stock. Next stamp the sentiment in full strength with Cherry Cobbler. Attach to the Daffodil Delight card stock and attach both to the Cherry Cobble card stock. Set aside for the time being.
Next take the 5″ x 3 3/4″ Whisper White card stock, this will be our background for the card. I stamped the candles so they are alternating colors and heights. For the candle base I stamped off once and for the stripes and flames I stamped with full strength color. Stamp half the candles in Cherry Cobbler and the other half as well as the flame in Daffodil Delight.
Attach the background to the Daffodil Delight card stock and then attach both to the Cherry Cobbler card base. Lastly you’ll want to take the sentiment and attach it to the front of the card using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
Following Gryffindor is the House that values dedication, patience, and loyalty. The House colors for Hufflepuff are canary yellow and black. I used Daffodil Delight and the Memento pad in Tuxedo Black to substitute the colors. Follow the instructions above replacing Cherry Cobbler with the Memento pad and keep Daffodil Delight the same.
Next up; the House of wit, learning, and wisdom. The House colors for Ravenclaw are blue and bronze . I used Blueberry Bushel and Soft Suede to substitute the colors. Follow the instructions above replacing Cherry Cobbler with Blueberry Bushel and Daffodil Delight with Soft Suede, save for the candle flames. There is one major difference between this card and the instructions, however. With the Soft Suede I stamped off twice for the candle base and splatter. Additionally I stamped off once for the stripes instead of using it full strength. I found this method matched my desired color of bronze and that it was too dark otherwise.
Last but certainly not least is Slytherin, the House that seeks those who represent cunning, resourcefulness, and ambition. This is my own House and I’m a very proud member judging by all the Slytherin gear I own! The House colors are green and silver, I used Garden Green and Smoky Slate to substitute the colors. Follow the instructions above replacing Cherry Cobbler with Garden Green and Daffodil Delight with Smoky Slate, save for the candle flames.
I wanted to create a card that was easy to make and could work for all four Houses. What’s your Hogwarts house? Let me know in the comments below! I hope I can meet a few more Slytherins.
